One of the last locks disappeared this morning with the Rams’ firing of Scott Linehan. In a down economy, it was a blessing to know that easy money could be made on Sunday, but as they say “all good things must come to an end,” and so it has. This firing was inevitable. There’s a drastic difference between college and the pros and that’s why coaches like Pete Carroll, Nick Saban and to a lesser extent, Bobby Petrino can succeed with college kids rather than pros. In college, the coach assumes full control; in the pros, it’s the players. When Linehan benched his $60M QB, it was all but over; had the Rams won, he might’ve gotten away with it temporarily, but when you’re 0-4, and losing games by 20, you can’t afford to have a player who eats up a significant portion of your salary cap riding the pine, especially not a proven one.

The Rams have apparently tabbed Jim Haslett to take over in the interim. It’s not a poor choice; he didn’t win consistently in New Orleans, but then again, he had Aaron Brooks as his QB. It was a toss of the coin when that guy took the field; one moment he’d play brilliantly and another he’d look like a 3rd string QB. He now takes over a team in a bit of disarray, but amazingly they’re only two games out of the division lead, and as evidenced by yesterday’s thrashing the Cards took at the hands of the Jets, the NFC West race is still wide open.
